Meet Lucero Macedo, ITMI Alum

What inspired you to become a tour director?
The passion for learning and sharing the beauty of this world! I think it all started when I was a little girl. I loved listening to my father tell vivid stories about our family and regional history. From him, I learned that storytelling can inspire love, curiosity, admiration, and reflection—it’s all about sharing feelings the right way

How do you balance your personal life with a travel career?
After each tour, I take “self” time to recharge. I prioritize my health and well-being through careful scheduling, making time for rest, pampering, and emotional reset.

What qualities make for a great tour director?
Passion, patience, attention to detail, and empathy. Passion is the fuel—it keeps you inspired and engaged. Patience helps you navigate the challenges of the road. Empathy lets you feel the unspoken needs of your guests, and attention to detail ensures every element of the tour runs smoothly.

What advice would you give to a first-time traveler?
Immerse all your senses in the experience! Enjoy the differences. Take in the sights, breathe in new aromas, let the foreign breeze touch your skin, listen to the local music, and taste everything. Travel is about full immersion—go and explore!

What are your 3 must-have items on tour?
My phone, a bottle of water, and my camera!

If you could design your dream tour, what would it look like?
It would focus on photography and design lovers—combining history, art, and local creativity. We’d visit iconic sites and explore local artist studios, tying historical elements to modern inspirations. Plus: fun dining, unexpected touches, and sensory surprises for creative souls.

Who’s a famous person you’d like to travel with?
Marco Polo! I’d love to retrace his steps in today’s world and explore how the places he once visited have evolved.

How has tour directing shaped your worldview?
Tour directing has expanded my mind and heart. It’s made me more open, flexible, and appreciative of the deep beauty in cultural differences and similarities. It’s a constant celebration of humanity.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in tour directing?
Make sure you love it! This work is gratifying, but it’s also physically and emotionally demanding. If you have true passion for it—go all in.
